Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Xerox 700 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run an in-plant print shop, CRD, or small commercial printer turning out 30,000-100,000 click charges a month.
  • You print mixed short-run color jobs — booklets, postcards, manuals, training materials — and need 12 x 18 / SRA3 capacity for full-bleed letter-size work.
  • You need to handle stocks from 64 gsm to 220 gsm including coated, with auto duplex on most weights.
  • You already have an EFI Fiery or Creo workflow and want a hardware refresh that drops in.
  • You bill click charges to clients and want a true production engine, not a heavy office MFP.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You run a school or church print shop with bursts of 5,000-page jobs — the engine handles it but you'll want the optional 2,000-sheet HCF and a finisher.
  • You're outgrowing a Xerox WorkCentre 7855 or Konica C754 — 700 is a real step up in stock range and registration, but plan for ~$80k vs ~$15k street.
  • You need booklet making with stitch and trim — the Booklet Maker Finisher D2 adds it; budget the floor space.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 15,000 pages a month — this is a production press; total cost of ownership is hard to justify versus an AltaLink C8070.
  • You need oversize beyond 13 x 19 — get a Xerox iGen, Versant 180/280, or a Color 800 / 1000 Press instead.
  • You don't have a trained operator or print room — the 700 needs daily calibration, registration checks, and stock loading; it is not a walk-up office device.
  • You need clear, gold, silver, or white dry ink — the 700 is CMYK only; step up to a Color 800/1000 or Versant for fifth-station options.
  • You don't have 200V / dedicated circuit and the floor space for a 525-lb engine plus feeders, finishers, and a print server cabinet.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Xerox 700 Digital Color Press is a light-production CMYK color press built for in-plant shops, CRDs, and small commercial printers that need true production registration, stock range, and duty cycle without stepping up to an iGen or Versant. It runs 70 ppm letter B&W and color on uncoated 64-176 gsm, 51 ppm on coated 106-176 gsm, at 2400 x 2400 dpi, with an Advanced Registration Technology unit that holds tight front-to-back alignment for booklets and duplex jobs. Maximum sheet size is 13 x 19 with full-bleed 12 x 18 in production, and the engine handles stocks from 64 gsm up to 220 gsm with auto duplex on most weights. Standard configuration includes a 250-sheet duplex DADF for the integrated scanner; jobs are typically driven through an external EFI Fiery EX, Creo, or FreeFlow print server. Monthly duty cycle is rated 300,000 impressions but Xerox recommends staying around 65,000 / month for sustainable economics. Footprint is 68 x 31 x 54 inches at 525 lb for the engine alone — feeders, finishers, and the server cabinet add real square footage. The thing buyers regret: assuming the 700 is just a faster WorkCentre. It is not. It needs trained operators, daily calibration, and a print room. We sell it to print-for-pay shops graduating from a 7800-series and to in-plants that bill departments by the click.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

The Xerox Color EC70 is a tabloid-size color laser MFP built for print-for-pay and franchise print shops, offering additional features like an integrated color server and optional specialty toner kits. The EC70 also supports a wider range of media, including synthetics and window clings, and has a higher standard paper capacity. For small offices, the Xerox 700 is ideal for those needing production-level quality and registration, while the EC70 is better suited for shops requiring versatility and specialty printing capabilities.

Its speed of 70 ppm and advanced features like tight registration and high-quality output make it suitable for businesses with significant printing needs. However, its size, need for trained operators, and daily calibration may be excessive for typical small business requirements.
