Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Xerox 770 Digital Color Press is actually for

Most equipment pages just tell you what a device does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We offer equipment for every business need, but the right machine depends on your specific workflow.

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a small in-plant or quick-print shop turning out 75,000-300,000 color clicks per month and need consistent A3/SRA3 color at 2400 x 2400 dpi.
  • You print mixed weight stocks 64-300 gsm — heavyweight covers, glossy brochures, postcards, tabs, DocuMagnet — without slowing the engine to a crawl.
  • You already own or want to standardize on a Xerox FreeFlow or EFI Fiery print server for variable data, PANTONE/Fogra workflows.
  • You want one device that can also copy and scan to A3 for jobs that walk in the door — the 250-sheet DADF doubles as a workhorse scanner.
  • You need ACQS (Automatic Color Quality Suite) closed-loop calibration on the 770 configuration to keep color stable across long runs.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 30,000-75,000 clicks a month — engine is overbuilt but the per-click cost on a Xerox click charge contract still pencils out.
  • You're stepping up from a 7000/700i — the 770 keeps the same footprint and operator workflow, just adds ACQS and the 70 ppm engine.
  • You run heavy coated stocks (177-300 gsm) — it handles them at full rated 70 ppm on the 770 (the 700i drops to 17-25 ppm on A3 in that weight range).
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 20,000 clicks a month — you're paying for a 450K-duty production press to run office work. Get an AltaLink C8045 instead.
  • You need true offset image quality with 5th color station — the 770 is CMYK only; the Color 800/1000 series adds Clear/Silver/Gold specialty dry inks.
  • You need media wider than SRA3 (12 x 18) — max sheet is 330 x 488 mm. For 13 x 19.2 step up to the 800i/1000i.
  • You don't have a maintained Xerox click contract or local production-print tech — these engines need scheduled drum/fuser/IBT swaps that aren't end-user serviceable.
  • You need 200V single phase 50A circuit availability — the press requires 200-240 VAC, not standard 120V office wiring.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Xerox 770 Digital Color Press is the upper end of the 700-series production engine — a small-footprint A3/SRA3 color cut-sheet press built for in-plants, quick-print shops, and corporate reprographics running 75,000-300,000 color clicks a month. It runs at a flat 70 ppm A4 / 35 ppm A3 / 31 ppm SRA3 across all weights from 64 to 300 gsm coated and uncoated, which is the main reason it gets picked over the 700i (the 700i throttles down to 15-25 ppm on heavyweight A3). Print resolution is 2400 x 2400 dpi with Xerox EA low-melt toner and the 770's exclusive Automatic Color Quality Suite (ACQS) for closed-loop tonal reproduction calibration. Standard configuration is 1,900 sheets across three internal 550-sheet trays plus a 250-sheet bypass; max paper capacity is 5,900 sheets with two Oversized High Capacity Feeders. The integrated DADF copies and scans up to A3 at 50 ppm color / 80 ppm B&W, which is unusual on a press at this tier. Pick a print server: Xerox FreeFlow, Xerox EX (Fiery), Xerox Integrated Fiery, or Xerox CX (Creo). Footprint is 67.5 x 30.6 x 54 inches base unit on a 200-240V circuit. The thing buyers regret: max sheet size is 330 x 488 mm (SRA3). If you need 13 x 19.2 inch with a 5th color station for metallic or clear, step up to the Color 800/1000 family. We sell the 770 to corporate in-plants, university print shops, and direct-mail houses that want offset-comparable color at digital turnaround.
