Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Xerox AltaLink C8170 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a high-volume color print room or a department of 75-200 users churning through tabloid color — marketing comps, proposals, brochures, training materials.
  • You print 12,000-30,000 pages a month and need real headroom — duty cycle is 300,000 with a recommended monthly volume in the high teens of thousands.
  • You scan stacks of mixed-size color originals constantly — the 250-sheet single-pass DADF runs at 135 ppm simplex / 270 ipm duplex, which keeps a clerk from babysitting the feeder.
  • You need finishing — the BR Booklet Maker Finisher with C-fold/Z-fold turns this into a real in-house print shop (64-page saddle-stitched booklets, hole punch, multi-position staple).
  • You need enterprise security — Trusted Boot, Trellix whitelisting, Common Criteria, FIPS 140-3, McAfee ePO and Cisco ISE integration.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 6,000-12,000 pages a month — overbuilt for that, but the cost-per-page is fine and you have growth headroom.
  • You want Wi-Fi standard — NFC is built in, but Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi Direct requires the optional Dual Band Wireless Kit.
  • You're moving from a Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C7000-class or Konica bizhub C750i — operators get the 10.1" tablet UI quickly but expect 2-3 weeks of "where's the button" support tickets.
  • You need a Fiery print server for color-critical print — the optional EX-c C8100 Print Server Powered by Fiery is available, but it's a separate spend and a separate workflow.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 5,000 pages a month — you're paying for a 70 ppm production-class A3 color MFP and using a fraction of it. Get a C8145 or C8155 instead.
  • You're tight on floor space — base footprint with HCTT is 24.4 x 31.2 x 46 in., the device weighs 352 lb, and full BR Booklet Maker config pushes the width past 90 inches. Measure first.
  • You need to plug into a regular 15A outlet — the C8170 in North America wants a dedicated 20A circuit at 110-127V.
  • You don't have a Xerox dealer relationship — managed-print/dealer channel device, not retail.
  • You print sustained heavy color (50%+) without a metered color rate — toner economics get expensive fast at this speed.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Xerox AltaLink C8170 is the production-class top of the AltaLink C8100 color tabloid family — a floor-standing A3 color laser MFP built for high-volume departments and small in-house print rooms running 12,000 to 30,000 pages a month with regular tabloid color output and constant scanning. It prints and copies up to 70 ppm in both color and black, runs the 250-sheet single-pass DADF at 135 ppm simplex / 270 ipm duplex, and is rated for a 300,000-page monthly duty cycle. Standard paper capacity with the high-capacity tandem tray is 3,140 sheets, expandable to 6,140 with the 3,000-sheet HCF. The 10.1" tablet-like color touchscreen runs the same ConnectKey stack as the rest of the AltaLink line (Workflow Central, App Gallery, Fleet Orchestrator), and security is enterprise-grade (Trusted Boot, Trellix Embedded Control whitelisting, Common Criteria, FIPS 140-3, McAfee ePO and Cisco ISE integration). With the BR Booklet Maker Finisher and the C-fold/Z-fold unit it functions as a real small print shop (64-page saddle-stitched booklets, multi-position staple, 2/3-hole punch). Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus USB 2.0 standard; Wi-Fi is an optional kit. The thing buyers regret: not budgeting for the dedicated 20A circuit and the floor space — base footprint is already 24.4 x 31.2 x 46 in. and full finisher configurations push width past 90 inches.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 4 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Xerox machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We got this for our office last year and it's been reliable. Color output is sharp and the finishing options with the booklet maker have cut down on our outsourcing costs. Network setup took a minute but documentation was solid."
  • "Good workhorse for a small print shop. Speed is decent and the touch interface is intuitive enough. My only complaint is toner costs are steep if you're doing high volume color work regularly."
  • "Good machine overall for a mid-size office. Toner costs are reasonable and the finishing options work well. My only complaint is the user interface takes some getting used to if you're coming from a different brand."
  • "Solid workhorse for our print room. The AltaLink handles high-volume jobs without slowing down, and the mobile printing integration actually works the way it's supposed to. Haven't had a major service issue in two years."
